No great uptake for “Alternative” beauty contest

How far would you go to challenge conventional ideas of beauty? Would you proudly showcase your wrinkles, saggy breasts, cellulite and other bodily imperfections?

A remote Icelandic town is encouraging people to take part in their alternative beauty pageant, to “change the rules of what beauty is”.

The contest, scheduled for April 18, will be held in the town of Isafjoerdur, population 3 000, in the north-west of Iceland.

Men and women are welcome to register as contestants and while there is a minimum age of 20, there is no upper age limit. The only other stipulation is that contestants had not gone under the plastic surgeon's knife for cosmetic reasons.

Prizes are as yet undecided, but according to organizers, the "fun and honour" of taking part would be sufficient reward for contestants.

Organisers remain undecided on how to rate participants.

As of Wednesday five people, three women and two men, had registered to take part.
